Maintenance and Anti-Loosening Methods for Bulldozer Ring Gear Bolts After Replacement
Here is a set of standard maintenance procedures and anti-loosening techniques for bulldozer ring gear bolts (drive wheel ring gear bolts) after replacement. They are simple, practical and easy to understand, and can be directly followed on construction sites to effectively prevent bolt loosening, breakage, falling off and other failures.
I. Mandatory Maintenance on the Day of Replacement (Critical & Indispensable)
1. Re-tightening a second time (Top Priority)
After installation, fully tighten all bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque. After the bulldozer has operated for 1–2 hours, stop the machine while the ring gear is still hot and re-tighten all bolts again.
Important Note: The ring gear expands when heated, which may loosen the initially tightened bolts. Without a second re-tightening, bolts are highly likely to fall off during later operation.
2. Check that anti-loosening measures are in place
① Bolts must be high-strength grade, normally
Grade 10.9 or 12.9. Ordinary bolts are strictly prohibited.
② Apply medium-to-high strength thread locker to the bolt threads to ensure secure locking.
③ If lock washers or locking plates are equipped, bend and lock them firmly to engage tightly with the bolts.
All three anti-loosening measures are essential. Otherwise, bolts will definitely loosen or fall off when the bulldozer performs heavy-duty work or under impact loads.
3. Clean the mating surfaces of the ring gear and hub
Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces between the ring gear and hub to ensure no oil, rust, mud or sand remains. Uneven or contaminated mating surfaces cause uneven stress on bolts, which can easily lead to repeated shear breakage during long-term operation.

① First 100 hours: Inspect all ring gear bolts every 25 hours.
② After 100 hours: Inspect every 50–100 hours.
If any bolt is found loose, stop the machine immediately to re-tighten and reapply thread locker to eliminate hidden dangers.

Regularly apply gear oil or grease to the meshing area between the ring gear and drive wheel to reduce impact and vibration, which indirectly lowers the chance of bolt loosening.

Avoid unilateral loading
Avoid operating the bulldozer with unbalanced side loading or forcing through stuck conditions. High unilateral resistance concentrates full torque on just a few bolts, which can shear them directly.

Disassemble and inspect ring gear bolts at least once per year. Check for bolt stretching, thread stripping, cracks or other damage. Replace any defective bolts immediately as a full set; do not use them temporarily.

Bolts that are stretched, damaged or fail to meet torque requirements must be replaced as a complete set. Mixing old and new bolts is strictly prohibited to avoid uneven loading and chain failures.

Protect bolts and bolt holes from water and mud intrusion to prevent rust, which makes future disassembly difficult and reduces bolt strength, creating safety hazards. A small amount of grease applied to bolt heads can help prevent dust and water.
